Folk Night @ the Registry was one of Canada’s first folk music venues to offer regular live streams of its concerts. This popular addition to its viewing options allows those who can’t attend a concert in-person, or who are affected by inclement weather, to still watch live shows that they might otherwise miss.

This viewing option was made possible by the combined efforts of the Registry Theatre during the pandemic when it purchased and installed the equipment necessary to stream its shows, and the Folk Night volunteer team who, with the Registry’s assistance, trained on the use of this state-of-the-art equipment.
The intent of Folk Night’s online stream is to provide an enhanced close-to-theatrical experience to our viewers. To do this, each show is captured on 5 high-quality digital video cameras that cover multiple angles and zoom levels, allowing for both wide-shots and close-ups only possible using such equipment. Likewise, all audio is drawn from the same mics and pickups used for the stage production, but are mixed separately to provide as rich & vivid a musical performance as one would hear in the theatre.

Because they’re not present for our door-prize giveaway during the mid-show break, online viewers instead get to watch a 10-minute Interview segment recorded earlier that same afternoon and hosted by DJ, interviewer and folk music supporter Jan Vanderhorst of “Just Us Folk” as he speaks candidly and informally with our musical guests. These excellent and insightful conversations are very popular with our guests and online viewers alike. Oh, and just in case you’re wondering, our online viewers do get to watch the door-prize segment as well so that they don’t miss out on anything… they’re just not eligible for the prizes.

After each show, the performer interviews are uploaded to our YouTube channel where they’re made available for all to see.
